Maurizio Falanga received his university degree for Theoretical Physics and Astronomy at the University of Basel (1998) and his PhD degree in astrophysics from the University of Rome "La Sapienza" (2002). His scientific background is in high-energy astrophysics. After his PhD he held various research positions in Europe, e.g., at CEA-Saclay, Paris, France. He was a member of the INTEGRAL Users Group of ESA, and is a member of different Science Working Group for future study mission's concept. He has also served on numerous Time Allocation Committees for orbiting X-ray missions. He is also member of the board of Directors for Astronomy & Astrophysics Journal, Swiss representative. Since 2009, he is Science Program Manager at the International Space Science Institute (ISSI) in Bern, Switzerland. Since September 2013 he has been appointed as the founding Executive Director of the International Space Sciences Institute in Beijing, China, and visiting Professor at the National Space Science Centre in Beijing, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He received the venia docendi in physics from the University of Basel in 2013.
The focus of my research is to study diverse unresolved phenomena in high-energy astrophysics. Accretion and emission in neutron stars, white dwarfs and black holes; Physics of the pulsar magnetosphere, X-ray polarization, accretion wind models, radiative transfer, stars atmospheres, magnetohydrodynamics, type I X-ray bursts, numerical simulation, mapping supermassive black holes.Students are welcome to pursue theoretical and/or numerical research in one of the above-mentioned topics towards achieving their Bachelor, Master, Diploma and PhD degrees.
